Triumph Tips: Ways to Cultivate More Gratitude This Season
As Thanksgiving approaches, our team at Triumph Roofing is filled with gratitude! This special time of year reminds us to cherish life’s simple joys. Here are some of our top tips for cultivating gratitude year-round:
Gratitude Jar
Keep a dedicated jar where you jot down notes about what you’re thankful for through the month of November. This is also an activity to then later read at Thanksgiving dinner!
Random Acts of Kindness
A surprise note for a coworker, a favorite treat for a friend, or a helping hand for a neighbor—these small gestures go a long way in showing you care and are spreading joy to others.
Gratitude Pumpkin
This is a fun activity to do as a family or if you’re a teacher, with your students! Use a large pumpkin and a Sharpie pen to begin adding things your family is grateful for. Do this starting in November and ending just before Thanksgiving. You can either use a large pumpkin or do little pumpkins that each member of the family (or classroom) completes. On Thanksgiving, put your pumpkin/s in the center of your table for all to view, as they make adorable decor.

Why Is Roof Cleaning Important?
Organic debris from overhanging trees can accumulate in your roof’s valleys, leading to roof decay and dry rot. Additionally, missing, slipped, or broken tiles can expose your roof to harmful UV rays, making it more brittle and dry. This can accelerate the deterioration of your roof’s underlayment and increase the risk of leaks.

Our team of professional roofers at Triumph Roofing will meticulously clean your roof, removing all organic debris and debris from your roof valleys. This will help to prevent roof decay and dry rot, extending the life of your roof and protecting your home from potential water damage.

Protect Your Roof: The Importance of Decking Maintenance
Your roof is more than just a protective layer; it’s a critical component of your home’s structure. A well-maintained roof not only shields your home from the elements but also helps to protect your investment. One often overlooked aspect of roof maintenance is the health of your roof decking.
The Role of Underlayment
The underlayment, the layer beneath your shingles or tiles, plays a crucial role in protecting your roof decking. It acts as a secondary barrier against moisture, preventing leaks and protecting the underlying wood. If your underlayment is expired or damaged, your roof decking is at risk.
The Dangers of Wood Rot
Roof decking is typically made of wood, a material susceptible to rot and decay when exposed to moisture. If leaks develop or underlayment is compromised, moisture can infiltrate the decking, leading to wood rot. This type of damage is not only unsightly but can also cause significant structural damage to your home.
A Real-Life Example
Recently, our roofing team encountered a home where the homeowner had neglected roof inspections. Due to a damaged underlayment and subsequent leaks, the roof decking had deteriorated to the point of collapse. Our roofer accidentally stepped through the rotted decking, falling into the living room below. Fortunately, no one was injured, but this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper roof maintenance.
Preventing Wood Rot
To prevent wood rot and protect your roof decking, it’s essential to:
- Conduct regular roof inspections: Schedule routine inspections to identify and address any signs of damage or wear.
- Replace damaged underlayment: If your underlayment is expired or damaged, have it replaced promptly.
- Address leaks promptly: Repair leaks as soon as they are discovered to prevent further damage.
- Ventilate your attic: Adequate ventilation helps to reduce moisture buildup and prevent mold and mildew growth.
- Consider a roof coating: A roof coating can provide an additional layer of protection against moisture and extend the lifespan of your roof.
By taking these steps, you can help to ensure the longevity and structural integrity of your roof. Remember, neglecting roof maintenance can lead to costly repairs and potential safety hazards.

How Long Do Tile Roofs Last in Arizona?
Tile roofs have long been a popular choice for homeowners in Arizona due to their durability, aesthetic appeal, and energy efficiency. However, their lifespan can vary significantly depending on factors such as the installation quality, the underlayment underneath, and the severity of local environmental conditions.
What Affects the Lifespan of Tile Roofs?
Environmental Factors
Wind: Arizona is prone to strong winds, which can damage tiles if they are not properly secured.
Hail: Hailstorms can cause significant damage to tile roofs, especially if the tiles are thin or brittle.
UV Radiation: Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause tiles to fade and deteriorate over time.
Roofing Underlayment
The actual roofing material can last approximately 200-300 years, but what actually expires is the underlayment underneath. G40 asphalt paper is most commonly used in concrete tile roofing, and that will only last close to 20 – 25 years. They used to use modified bitumen for clay tiles because it was more durable and it was 90 pounds of paper rather than 40. However, this still expires in about 20-25 years.
So what it really comes down to is the fact that clay, slate, or concrete tile is used to protect the roofing underlayment from the UV rays and other harsh elements. When we do a concrete roofing system, we dry, detach, and reset. When we do this, we are typically stacking the roofing tiles on the roof and tearing off the old underlayment underneath. Then we will put down new underlayment, new batten, and new flashings. We then stack the tile back in place and reuse them. That is what we do 90% of the time.
So what really expires is your roofing underlayment because it is made of asphalt. Asphalt is made of oil and through the contraction/expansion of the underlayment, the underlayment starts to shrink, curl, and tear.
Tips for Extending the Lifespan of Your Tile Roof
- Regular Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of your roof to identify any signs of damage, such as cracks, missing tiles, or leaks.
- Proper Maintenance: Clean your roof regularly to remove debris, such as leaves, twigs, and dirt, which can trap moisture and accelerate deterioration.
- Address Issues Promptly: If you notice any damage to your roof, address it promptly to prevent further problems.
- Consider a Roof Coating: A roof coating can help to protect your tiles from the elements and extend their lifespan.

Why Homeowners Should Leave Roofing to the Pros
It’s understandable why homeowners might be tempted to tackle roofing projects themselves. The allure of saving money and the satisfaction of completing a home improvement task can be powerful. However, the risks involved in climbing onto a roof, especially when dealing with a complex task like roofing, far outweigh the potential rewards!
Hidden Dangers of Homeowners On Roofs
- Falls: The most obvious and severe risk associated with DIY roofing is the danger of falling! Roofs can be slippery and the height involved can lead to serious injuries.
- Injuries: Even if a fall is avoided, homeowners can still sustain injuries while working on roofs. This includes cuts, bruises, sprains, and strains from awkward movements or heavy lifting that you are not used to.
- Property Damage: Attempting a roofing project without proper training or equipment can lead to costly property damage. Mistakes, such as improper installation or sealing, can result in leaks, mold, and structural damage.
- Voiding Warranties: Many roofing manufacturers offer warranties on their products. However, these warranties may be voided if the roofing materials are not installed by a qualified professional. This means that homeowners could be responsible for the entire cost of repairs or replacements if something goes wrong.
The Importance of Professional Roofing
- Safety: Professional roofing companies, like Triumph Roofing have the necessary equipment, training, and experience to safely navigate roofs and complete complex tasks. They also have insurance to cover any accidents or injuries that may occur!
- Expertise: Roofing is a specialized trade that requires knowledge of materials, techniques, and building codes. Professional roofers have the expertise to ensure that the job is done correctly and efficiently.
- Quality: When you hire a professional roofing company, you can be confident that you are getting high-quality materials and workmanship. This will help to protect your investment in your home for years to come.
- Peace of Mind: Knowing that your roof is in the hands of experienced professionals can give you peace of mind and allow you to focus on other aspects of your life!

Converting a Tile Roof to a Shingle Roof
Is your tile roof starting to show its age? Are you considering a switch to shingles for a more modern look or to reduce maintenance costs? Converting a tile roof to a shingle roof can be a significant project, but it’s entirely doable. Here’s a breakdown of the process, from our team at Triumph Roofing.
Why Consider a Tile-to-Shingle Conversion?
Several reasons might drive you to make this switch. Aesthetics is often a factor. Shingles offer a variety of colors and styles, allowing for a more contemporary or personalized look. Maintenance can be another consideration. Tile roofs, while durable, can require more upkeep than shingles, especially when dealing with broken tiles or moss growth. Additionally, shingles can often be a more cost-effective option in the long run, especially when factoring in repair and replacement costs.
The Conversion Process
Converting a tile roof to a shingle roof involves several steps:
- Inspection and Assessment: Our team will conduct a thorough inspection of your roof to determine the condition of the underlying structure, the type of tiles, and any potential issues. This information will help us plan the conversion effectively.
- Removal of Existing Tiles: We’ll carefully remove the existing tiles from your roof, ensuring that the underlying structure remains intact. This step may require special equipment to prevent damage to the roof or surrounding areas.
- Roof Repair and Inspection: Once the tiles are removed, we’ll inspect the roof for any damage or weaknesses. If necessary, we’ll make repairs to ensure the structural integrity of your roof before proceeding with the shingle installation.
- Installation of Underlayment: A waterproof underlayment is installed on top of the roof deck to provide an additional layer of protection against moisture and leaks.
- Shingle Installation: The shingles are then installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes. We’ll ensure that the shingles are properly secured and that the roof meets all safety standards.
Important Factors in Tile-to-Shingle Conversion
When planning a tile-to-shingle conversion, there are several factors to keep in mind:
- Cost: The cost of the conversion will depend on several factors, including the size of your roof, the type of shingles you choose, and any necessary repairs.
- Permits and Regulations: You may need to obtain permits and comply with local building codes for this project.
- Timeline: The duration of the conversion will vary depending on the size of your roof and other factors.
- Waste Management: Removing and disposing of the old tiles can generate a significant amount of waste. We’ll handle this responsibly and in accordance with local regulations.
